Taylor Townsend was born on April 16, 1996, in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Her parents are Gary Townsend, and Sheila Jones Townsend. Both of her parents are working as high school administrators. Her mother was previously working as a banker and has played Division II tennis at Lincoln University in Missouri.
Taylor Townsend became the second American to ever win the 2012 Australian Open junior tournament since 1989 when she was just 15 years old. She won the doubles title at the 2012 Australian Open junior tournament, making her the first American to win both the singles and doubles titles at a junior Grand Slam event.

Taylor Townsend was named the 2012 ITF Junior World Champion after finishing the year No. 1 in the girls’ junior rankings. She became the first American to do so since Gretchen Rush in 1982.
Taylor Townsend won her first career match after entering her first professional-level tournament in October 2010 at the age of 14. She made her WTA Tour debut in singles at the 2013 Indian Wells Masters in a win against Lucie Hradecká. She reached her career-high WTA ranking of No. 61 in July 2018.
