Authorities say two men were critically hurt in a northern Nevada desert fireworks weekend event that occurred at a huge gathering of people at popular off-roading and party venue.

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office stated in a statement Sunday, May 29 that one man was hospitalised in critical condition after being wounded in the chest by a firework that went off in a crowd after exploding in the palm of a man who lit it at midnight Saturday, May 28.
According to the statement, the individual who lit the firecracker was standing on a rocky outcropping in front of a gathering of 500 people. He sustained “severe abnormalities and damage to this left hand” and was hospitalised in stable condition.

The incident occurred about 20 miles north of Reno at Moon Rocks, a desert area with distinctive rock features on the federally controlled territory.
According to the statement, people on the site assisted both guys before medical services arrived and coordinated transportation to hospitals.
The incident served as a reminder of the dangers of pyrotechnics, “particularly when mixed with alcohol or other substances,” according to the sheriff’s office.
