Mcafee Knob Death: Hiker dies after 50-foot fall

Paul Classen a 23-year-old hiker from the Netherlands was confirmed dead by Roanoke County fire authorities on Tuesday, May 31 after he fell 50 feet from the summit of McAfee Knob over the weekend. He died as a result of his injuries.

According to the Roanoke County Fire and Rescue Department, the hiker, Paul Classen died at the hospital on Sunday, May 29.

Crews were alerted to the McAfee Knob peak in the Masons Cove area at 6 a.m. on Sunday for a report of a guy in his 20s who had fallen approximately 50 feet.

According to the department, three all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), three police officers, and approximately 30 firefighters and rescue professionals assisted with this operation.

The initial responders were joined by a Carilion wilderness medicine doctor and other rescuers, who reportedly assisted in carrying the man to an ATV and then to a waiting medical helicopter, which transported him to Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He died from his injuries later that day.
