William Riley Gaul, Emma’s then ex-boyfriend was the main suspect in the case. According to Knox News, Gaul went through several attempts to grab Walker’s attention, including falsely stating he’d been kidnapped.

During Gaul’s trial, the jury heard that Gaul fired two shots into her bedroom wall near where she was sleeping before returning to his dorm at Maryville College and falling asleep, according to Knox News.

Authorities said Gaul stole his grandfather’s gun, a 9mm Glock, from his vehicle and fired two shots into Walker’s residence. He asked his buddies Alex McCarty and Noah Walton to assist him in disposing of the evidence once the crime was committed.

Unbeknownst to Gaul, McCarty and Walton had informed authorities of their concerns and assisted in the arrest of the college football player. Gaul’s murder trial jurors ultimately found him guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced him to life in prison.
