The Akita is a huge, strong dog with a noble and intimidating demeanour. In medieval Japan, they were originally employed to protect kings and nobility. These dogs also hunted and tracked wild boar, black bear, and occasionally deer.

The Akita does not back down from a challenge and is not easily frightened. As a result, they are courageous and devoted protectors of their families. When properly taught and socialised, they can be friendly, respectful, and humorous dogs.

The Akita was never bred to live or work in groups, preferring to live or work alone or in pairs. The Akita enjoys being an only dog and can be hostile toward other dogs who are not members of his family group.
In addition to their tremendous loyalty, Akitas enjoy cleanliness and are quickly housebroken. Because of these two features, they are excellent to have in the home. Because they are so clean and odourless, some people characterise Akitas as “cat-like.”
