The Akita is a huge dog breed that originated in the mountains of northern Japan. Akita comes in two varieties: a pure Japanese strain is known as Akita Inu and a mixed American strain that is often larger. The Akita has a short double coat, like many other northern spitz breeds.

Height: 64–70 cm (Male, Adult, Japanese Akita), 58–64 cm (Japanese Akita) (Female, Adult,  Japanese Akita) Mass: 32–39 kg (Male, Adult, Japanese Akita), 23–29 kg (Male, Juvenile, Japanese Akita)

Akita Dog Temperament

The Akita is a strong, independent, and dominant breed that is reserved among strangers but friendly and devoted to its family. Akitas are a resilient breed in general. Historically, they were utilised as guard dogs, fighting dogs, and bear hunters.

Akitas are less tolerant of dogs of the same gender. As a result, unless thoroughly socialised, Akitas are not generally well-suited for off-leash dog parks.
