Due to his passion for the Western New York area and local ties, Pegula was a favourite among most local Bills fans and local lawmakers to purchase the franchise. Pegula made it clear that he loved the team and was serious about purchasing the Bills and keeping them in Buffalo.

Pegula and his wife, co-owner Kim Pegula, bought the team from Ralph Wilson’s estate. He paid a record-breaking $1.4 billion for the club. Pegula had to deal with ruthless businessmen like President Donald Trump in the purchase of the Bills.

Terry Pegula made his money mostly from the exploitation of natural gas. He has controlled the Sabres since February 2011, as well as the American Hockey League’s Rochester Americans and the National Lacrosse League’s Buffalo Bandits.

In 2011, he gave $100 million to his alma university, Penn State, to assist fund the establishment of men’s and women’s varsity hockey programmes, as well as the construction of a new ice rink named after him.
