Ralph Lee Sampson Jr. is a retired professional basketball player from the United States. Sampson was the first pick in the NBA draught in 1983, and he arrived in the league with high expectations (NBA).

Sampson was probably the most widely sought college basketball talent of his generation, appearing six times on the cover of Sports Illustrated in less than four years.
Sampson was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 1996. He was one of just three Virginia Cavaliers to be named on the ACC 50th Anniversary men’s basketball team in 2002 as one of the 50 finest players in Atlantic Coast Conference history.

Sampson was inducted into the National College Basketball Hall of Fame on November 22, 2011. Sampson was named to the Houston Rockets’ and fans’ Decade Team of the 1980s in February 2012. On April 2, 2012, Sampson was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a part of the class of 2012.
For his first three seasons with the Houston Rockets, Sampson averaged 20.7 points and 10.9 rebounds before injuries began to take their toll. He retired as a four-time All-Star, NBA Rookie of the Year, and NBA All-Star Game MVP after three knee operations (1985).
