Djokovic is currently ranked world No. 1 by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and he has been ranked world No. 1 for a record total 372 weeks.

Djokovic was born on 22 May 1987 in Belgrade, SR Serbia, SFR Yugoslavia, to Srđan and Dijana Đoković. He is of paternal Serbian and maternal Croatian descent.

Djokovic’s father Srdan, dovetailed his professional skiing career with that of a ski instructor.

Eventually, Srdan ventured into business, owning a restaurant and sports equipment merch in the Serbian mountains with wife Dijana.

Djokovic began playing tennis at the age of four, after his parents gave him a mini-racket and a soft foam ball, which his father claimed became “the most beloved toy in his life”.

Djokivic’s parents then sent him to a tennis camp in Novi Sad and in the summer of 1993, as a six-year-old, he was sent to a tennis camp organized by the Teniski Klub Partizan and overseen by Yugoslav tennis player Jelena Genčic at Mount Kopaonik, where Djokovic’s parents ran a fast-food parlour and a sports equipment business.

Upon seeing the child Djokovic playing tennis, Jelena Genčic stated: “This is the greatest talent I have seen since Monica Seles.”

The contribution of Djokovic’s parents to his career cannot be underscored as they literally ensured that he became the star that he is today.

As said earlier, Djokovic’s parents first handed him a Tennis racket when he was just a toddler.

And after 20 Grand Slams, over $150 million in earnings, and an Olympic medal later, it’s safe to say that things have gone rather well for Djokovic and his parents.
