Craig Farrell Obituary

Craig Farrell was an English professional footballer who last played as a forward in the Football League for Whitby Town.

Farrell died on May 30, 2022 at the age of 39 and tributes have poured in for the ex-England youth star following the sad news of his passing which occurred on Monday evening.

Farrell was born in Middlesbrough and he joined Teesside club as a kid before moving to Leeds United in 1998.

However, Farrell never made an appearance for either side, but he went on to score 71 goals in 325 games for clubs including Carlisle and York.

Farrell’s career also saw him star for the likes of Exeter City and Rushden & Diamonds.

Farrell also won three caps for England Under-16s, scoring once at the Euro U16s tournament in 1999.

Farrell’s former team York City led the tributes, tweeting:

“We are saddened to learn of the passing of former player Craig Farrell, aged 39.

“Craig made 111 appearances and scored 27 goals for City between 2006 and 2009.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.”

Farrell last played for Blyth’s divisional rivals Whitby Town, making his debut in a 3–1 defeat at the Turnbull Ground, against Ashton United.

However, he retired in February 2015 due to a serious hip injury.
