Martha Elizabeth Beall was born on September 2, 1918, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. She then attended three colleges: Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, the University of Arkansas, and the University of Miami, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in 1942.

Martha Mitchell was married to John Mitchell, the first attorney general under President Richard Nixon. She became a prominent celebrity in Washington, D.C., for her candid remarks about politics and life in the capital.

Mitchell, who frequently called reporters, claimed that following the June 1972 break-in at the Democratic National Committee’s headquarters in the Watergate building complex, she was physically prohibited from contacting the press.
Martha Mitchell is not alive. Mitchell was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 1975. Despite receiving alimony, her husband’s payments lapsed, and she was allegedly struggling financially as her bone marrow illness advanced. On May 31, 1976, she died in a New York City hospital and was buried in her hometown of Pine Bluff.
