Richard Gilliland passed away on March 18, 2021, at the age of 71 from a heart condition.
Jean Smart and Gilliland met on the set of Designing Women. Smart and Gilliland married in 1987 in the rose garden of cast member Dixie Carter, according to USA Today. Connor, 31, and Bonnie Kathleen, 12, whom they adopted in 2009, are the couple’s children.

Smart stated in an interview with TODAY in May 2021 that she hoped her spouse could have seen her most recent works, “Hacks” and “Mare of Easttown,” which have both received critical acclaim and Emmy buzz.

Gilliland made his screen debut in the 1970s. The Waltons, Thirtysomething, Party of Five, Little Women, and a regular role on Designing Women are among his significant roles where he met Smart, who starred as Charlene in that series.
During season five of 24, Gilliland played Captain Stan Cotter, while his wife Jean Smart played First Lady Martha Logan.
