James Burke was a Lucchese crime family associate who is thought to have coordinated the 1978 Lufthansa theft, which was the greatest cash robbery in American history at the time. He is suspected of being responsible for the deaths of those involved in the months that followed the crime.

In 1982, Jimmy was found guilty of conspiracy and sentenced to 12 years in prison for his role in the 1978-79 Boston College basketball point-shaving controversy two years prior, he was arrested for a parole violation

While incarcerated, Henry Hill, his former associate testified that Jimmy murdered a drug dealer in 1979, for which he was sentenced to 20 years in jail in 1985.
Jimmy was supposed to be eligible for parole in March 2004, but that never happened. Jimmy got cancer while serving time at the Wende Correctional Facility in New York and died in April 1996 at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
