While cruise ship fires are unusual, they have occurred. More than 500 passengers and crew were evacuated from a burning ship roughly a mile off the north coast of Puerto Rico in 2016. Many people on board the Caribbean Fantasy ship required medical attention, but no fatalities were reported.

Passengers on a Carnival cruise from Miami to Seattle were compelled to quarantine last month after testing positive for COVID-19. Carnival did not specify how many of the 2,100 guests on board were affected. All afflicted passengers were sent to nearby motels after the ship docked.
