The mass shooting led to the death of four students and seven others injured, including a teacher.
Ethan Crumbley, then a 15-year old sophomore, was charged and arrested by authorities as an adult for 24 crimes, including murder and terrorism.

Ethan’s parents Jennifer and James Crumbley, were charged on December 3 with involuntary manslaughter for failing to secure the handgun used by their son in the shooting.
Strangely, Ethan’s parents failed to appear for their arraignment, after which they became subjects of a manhunt by the U.S. Marshals.
Ethan’s parents were caught and arrested in Detroit on December 4, 2021.
A former neighbor told the Detroit Free Press that, in 2014 and 2015, Ethan’s parents Jennifer and James often left their son home alone and without a phone while frequenting bars in downtown Lake Orion.
The neighbor became so concerned that she filed an anonymous complaint via phone to the state’s child protective services agency, but she did not know if any action was taken.
According to prosecutors, Ethan’s only friend moved away at the end of October 2021, and the family dog died, causing him to become depressed.
As early as March 2021, Ethan started sending his mother “disturbing texts about his state of mind”, which included claims about “demons” and “ghosts” inside the home.

The gun used by Ethan was a semiautomatic handgun and the surveillance footage reportedly showed him entering a bathroom with a backpack and then exiting it about a minute later without the backpack but with the gun.
At 12:51 p.m., police began receiving the first of around one hundred 9-1-1 calls about the shooting and responded to the school.

Within two to three minutes of the arrival of first responders, Ethan was arrested unharmed by a deputy assigned as a school resource officer and a second deputy who had responded to the scene.
According to the report, Ethan allegedly still had seven rounds of ammunition loaded into his gun and two 15-round magazines when he was stopped by the deputies.
The semiautomatic gun used by Ethan was the 9 mm SIG Sauer SP 2022.
At a news conference, Oakland County Undersheriff Michael McCabe said Ethan gave up without any problems.

Ethan also reportedly videotaped himself torturing animals, made Molotov cocktails, and drew a sketch of himself committing a school shooting, which he also joked about with a friend via text message.
At one point, Ethan allegedly kept a baby bird’s head in a jar, which he later placed in a school bathroom.
However, Ethan’s parents allegedly never sought therapy for him after any of those incidents.
According to a court filing in January 2022, Ethan plans to plead insanity in his criminal case.
“Please take notice that pursuant to MCL 769.20a the defendant Ethan Crumbley intends to assert the defense of insanity at the time of the alleged offense and gives his notice of his intention to claim such a defense,” reads a copy of the filing, obtained by The Detroit News.
