Twenty of the victims were youngsters aged six to seven, and six were adult members of the staff. Lanza shot and killed his mother at their Newtown home earlier that day, before heading to the school. Lanza committed suicide by shooting himself in the head as first responders arrived at the school.

The shooting is the deadliest mass shooting at an elementary school in American history, and the fourth-deadliest mass shooting in the country.

The shooting reignited discussion about gun regulation in the United States, prompting calls for universal background checks and new federal and state gun legislation prohibiting the sale and production of certain semi-automatic guns and magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition.

Lanza, who was 20 at the time, was old enough to carry a long gun like a rifle or shotgun but too young to own or carry handguns under Connecticut law. His mother had lawfully acquired the firearms he used.
