The shooting spree was the deadliest high school shooting in US history, exceeding the Columbine High School tragedy in Colorado in April 1999, which killed 15, including the perpetrators.

Cruz pleaded guilty to all counts and apologised for his acts on October 20, 2021. Sentencing was set for January 20, 2022. The sentencing was postponed several times, first to February 2022, then to April 2022, then to no sooner than June 21, 2022, and finally to June 27, 2022.
