American singer, actor, and politician, Sonny Bono, died on January 5, 1998, in a skiing accident while on a holiday trip with his family in South Lake Tahoe, California.

Bono, then 62, his wife Mary, and two of his children, were spending their vacation at the Heavenly Ski Resort, in Nevada-California.

Bono had left his family to ski alone that afternoon but was not seen several hours after. His wife had raised an alarm and a search party was sent out to look for him. Bono’s body was later found by a tree.

Police reports revealed that he had skied into a wooded area and hit a tree, leading to severe head injuries.

Bono was the Mayor of Palm Springs, California, for five consecutive years and the Republican congressman for California’s 44th district.

He came into power during the Republican Revolution and served until his demise.
