Neighbours was created by television executive Reg Watson.

Seven commissioned the show following the success of Watson’s earlier soap Sons and Daughters.

Although successful in Melbourne, Neighbours underperformed in the Sydney market and was cancelled by Seven four months after it began airing.

It was immediately commissioned by rival network Ten for a second production season, which began screening on 20 January 1986.

Neighbours has since gone on to become the longest-running drama series in Australian television history and in 2005, it was inducted into the Logie Hall of Fame.

Does Hendrix die in Neighbours?

Earlier this month, Hendrix, as viewers know, was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, a disease that occurs when the lung tissue is damaged.

Hendrix’s only treatment option is a lung transplant, which he’s struggled to come to terms with.

Struggling under the pressure and feeling smothered by everyone’s concern, Hendrix needed a break and went off to Sydney with his girlfriend Mackenzie.

In other series, this would have been used as a genuine excuse to take Hendrix off screen and conveniently ignore the plot for a few weeks, but not Neighbours.

Fans discovered new details of Hendrix’s backstory as he took Mackenzie to various locations that were important to him in his childhood.

They journey back to Ramsay Street where they share their engagement news there too.

But just when Hendrix thinks life couldn’t get any better, he gets the most important call he’ll ever receive.

Has Hendrix found a donor? Or is Hendrix going to die?

The next Scenes air from Monday May 23 on Channel 5.
