Following his release from jail, Michael Peterson currently lives a quiet life in Durham, North Carolina.

In the last couple of years, he has self-published two memoirs based on his relationship with Kathleen and his years in prison.
The memoirs,the claims were used for the scripting of the HBO “Staircase”.
He had lost so much money in the past years, forfeited Kathleen’s life insurance policy, and his step-daughter, Caitlin, obtained a $25 million settlement from him via a wrongful death claim against him.

Michael gives the returns from his book to charity as he wouldn’t be permitted to save them for himself.
He also believes that consenting to pay, would mean agreeing to killing Kathleen.
HBO’s ‘The Staircase’, is available on Netflix and on Sky.
