André Leon Talley died of heart attack and COVID-19 complications on January 18, 2022. He was 73.

André Leon Talley was a fashion journalist, stylist, creative director, and editor-at-large of Vogue magazine in the United States.

Talley wrote an autobiography called A.L.T.: A Memoir, which was published by Villard in 2003. The book’s message, according to Publishers Weekly, is that “style transcends race, class, and time. He styled Melania Trump for her 2005 wedding to Donald Trump.

In 2008, Talley provided fashion advice to the Obama family, as well as styling Michelle Obama for her first Vogue cover and introduced her to Taiwanese-Canadian designer Jason Wu, who went on to design multiple outfits for the First Lady, including her inaugural gown.

Talley won the Chevalier de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres honour for arts and letters in 2020 and the North Carolina Award for his contribution to writing the following year. He was the subject of Kate Novack’s documentary The Gospel According to André and was included in the documentaries The First Monday in May and The September Issue.
