When a parent passes away, the loss we feel is profound.

To overcome such grief, most people look for unique ways to remember their parents as a way to overcome their grief, such as creating an annual tradition or writing them a goodbye letter.

Also, others tend to honor their dead parents by staging expensive funerals.

Such a practice is commonly known as “showing one’s last respects”.

However, not everyone appears to deem it “necessary” to spend lavishly on funerals as a means of honoring one’s parents after they die.

This leads to the very important question, “what do yo do after a parent dies?”

Follow the steps below:

  1. Get a pronouncement of death.
  2. Contact your parent’s friends and family.
  3. Make funeral and burial plans.
  4. Get copies of the death certificate.
  5. Locate life insurance policies.
  6. Locate the will and start the probate process.
  7. Take inventory of assets and financial accounts.
  8. Notify government agencies/financial institutions.
  9. Make a list of bills and cancel unnecessary services.
  10. File a final tax return.
