Joe DiMaggio died on March 8, 1999, in Hollywood, Florida, after a five-month battle with lung cancer. On March 11, 1999, his funeral was held at Sts. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church in San Francisco, and he was laid to rest three months later at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma, California.

Joseph Paul DiMaggio was an American baseball centre fielder who spent his entire 13-year career with the New York Yankees. Joe is widely regarded as one of the greatest baseball players of all time, with a 56-game hitting streak that still stands.

DiMaggio won the Most Valuable Player Award three times and was an All-Star in each of his 13 seasons. The Yankees won ten American League pennants and nine World Series championships during his tenure. His nine World Series rings rank second only to fellow Yankee Yogi Berra’s thirteen.

In 1955, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, and in 1969, he was voted the sport’s greatest living player in a poll conducted during baseball’s centennial year
