Their bond, however, was never broken. Monroe was hospitalised in 1961 due to personal and medical issues. As a show of support, DiMaggio came to her bedside. He intended to remarry her, but Monroe died in 1962 before he could do so.

When Monroe died, DiMaggio took care of the funeral arrangements, even designing her tombstone. After the incident, the media reported that he was distraught, even saying, “I’ll go to my grave regretting and blaming myself for what happened to her. DiMaggio could also be heard repeatedly whispering, “I love you, I love you.”
DiMaggio sent six roses to her grave three times a week until he died 37 years later in 1999. According to his lawyer, DiMaggio’s final words were, “I’ll finally get to see Marilyn again.”
Although the two were unable to make their marriage work, there is no doubt that Monroe remained DiMaggio’s, true love.
