Gavin Smith died on January 14, 2019, at his home in Houston, Texas. He died from natural causes.

Gavin Smith was a professional poker player from Canada who won the World Poker Tour’s Season IV Mirage Poker Showdown Championship event and the WPT Season IV Player of the Year award in 2005, and then won the $2,500 Mixed Hold’em event and his first bracelet at the 2010 World Series of Poker.

Smith learned to play cards from his father, who taught him cribbage and rummy. At the age of 26, he began playing poker with coworkers in mixed games. Smith began working as a poker dealer in 1996 and opened his poker club in Kitchener, Ontario, in 1998.
Smith placed second in a World Series of Poker circuit event at Harrah’s New Orleans in May 2006, winning $293,930. Smith has won more than $6,321,000 in live tournaments. His 47 WSOP cash account for $1,673,208 in prize money.
