Lake Mead has a maximum length of 112 miles (180 kilometres) and a maximum depth of 532 feet (162 metres). The surface elevation of Lake Mead is 1,229 feet (375 metres) above sea level. Lake Mead has a surface area of 247 square miles (640 km2) and a water volume of 28.23 million acre-feet (34,820,000 megaliters).

Due to drought and increased water demand, the lake has remained below full capacity since 1983.

As of March 16, 2022, Lake Mead was 31.01% full at 8.753 million acre-feet (10,797,000 megaliters), falling below the reservoir’s previous all-time low of 9.328 million acre-feet (11,506,000 megaliters) in July 2016.

The majority of Lake Mead’s water comes from snowmelt in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah. The upstream Glen Canyon Dam, which is required to release 8.23 million acre-feet (10,150,000 megaliters) of water to Lake Mead each year, helps to moderate inflows to the lake.
