George Cole, best known for his role as Arthur Daley in Minder, died in August 2015 at the age of 90 after a short illness. Cole portrayed Cockney wheeler-dealer, Daley, for 16 years, from 1979 to 1994.

George Edward Cole, OBE was an English actor who had a 75-year career. He was best known for his roles as Arthur Daley in the ITV comedy-drama Minder and Flash Harry in the early St Trinian’s films. He was invested as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1992

Cole was born in the London borough of Tooting. At ten days old, he was given up for adoption and adopted by George and Florence Cole, a Tooting council employee and charwoman (cleaner), respectively.
He went to high school in nearby Morden. He dropped out of school at 14 to work as a butcher’s boy and planned to join the Merchant Navy, but he landed a part in a touring musical and decided to pursue acting as a career.
