Ed Koch was a Mayor of New York City from 1978 to 1989. Koch served as mayor for three terms. Koch was elected mayor of New York City for the first time in 1977, and he was re-elected with 75% of the vote in 1981. He was the first New York City mayor to receive support from both the Democratic and Republican parties.

Koch was re-elected to a third term in 1985 with 78 % of the vote. His third term was marred by a scandal involving political associates (though the scandal never directly affected him) and racial tensions, including the murders of Michael Griffith and Yusuf Hawkins. Koch lost the Democratic primary to his successor, David Dinkins, in a close race in 1989.

In his later years as mayor, he oversaw an ambitious public housing renewal programme, beginning by cutting spending and taxes and laying off 7,000 city workers.

Koch was a staunch supporter of Israel both as a congressman and as the second Jewish mayor of New York City (after Abraham Beame). He endorsed Rudy Giuliani for mayor of New York in 1993, Michael Bloomberg for mayor of New York in 2001, and George W. Bush for president in 2004.
