Ncuti Gatwa is Scottish-Rwandan. Gatwa was born in Kigali, Rwanda, in 1992, and moved to Scotland with his family in 1994 after fleeing the Rwandan Genocide.

The Gatwa family has lived in Edinburgh and Dunfermline, though Ncuti eventually moved to Glasgow to study acting at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
He joined the Dundee Repertory Theatre after graduation and then moved to London to pursue his dream of becoming an actor.
After Jodie Whittaker made history as the first female Doctor, Gatwa will take over as the Time Lord. He will be the first black actor to play the lead role in the show’s history.

Along with his new role as the 14th Doctor, he recently starred alongside Felicity Jones, Joe Alwyn, and Shailene Woodley in the 2021 film The Last Letter From Your Lover. He’ll also be seen in the upcoming Barbie film, directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie.
Ncuti is an African name that is pronounced ‘shoo-ti.’ The word “gatwa” is pronounced, “gat-wa.” Mizero Ncuti Gatwa is the actor’s full name.
