By a single vote, the court ruled that same-sex marriage cannot be outlawed in the United States and that all same-sex marriages must be recognised throughout the country, giving same-sex couples the same legal rights as heterosexual couples.
Following the announcement of the ruling, there were tears, hugs, and shouts of “USA USA USA!” outside the court. The few anti-gay marriage activists who reacted in disbelief were overwhelmed by a sea of rainbow flags, and the demonstration morphed into a street party.

In the 1990s, efforts to legalise same-sex marriage sprung up all over the United States.
Massachusetts was the first state to legalise same-sex marriage, doing so in 2004.
