The culture secretary said the proposal for Ofcom regulation would protect audiences from harmful material. The reforms are set out in a government, White Paper-a policy document.

A statement from the Department for Culture, Media and Sports say the proposals are intended to create a new golden age of British TV  and help the nation’s public service broadcasters thrive.

The government’s intention to privatise Channel 4, which is currently publicly owned but commercially funded is also set out in the White Paper.
