Ted Lasso is not about Olivia Wilde. Olivia Wilde’s ex-fiance is a co-creator of the beloved comedy. He credited Olivia Wilde in July 2021 with encouraging him to pursue the idea back in 2015.

Ted Lasso tells the story of a good-hearted and well-intentioned American coach who, despite his lack of experience, is brought in to save a fictional Premiership football team, AFC Richmond.

During a press conference in the first episode, he says, “I have never coached the sport that you call football, at any level.” “You could fill two internets with everything I don’t know about football,” says the author.

Ted also doesn’t realise that the club’s owner, Rebecca Welton hired him specifically to ensure the team’s failure to spite her ex-husband.

For many of the team’s irritable players, Ted’s unconventional coaching style and unwavering optimism take some getting used to, with hilarious results.

Fundamentally, it’s a comedy about a cultural clash. We follow Ted as he battles British cynicism and sarcasm while slowly but steadily winning over those he meets.
