Moldovan President Maia Sandu called for an urgent meeting of the country’s Supreme Security Council on Wed April 27, 2022 after two blasts damaged Soviet-era radio masts in the breakaway region of Transnistria.

The incidents which occurred on Tuesday (April 26, 2022) came after local officials reported several explosions at the state security ministry in the city of Tiraspol at 6pm (15:00 GMT) the day before (Mon, April 25, 2022), on a public holiday to commemorate the Orthodox Easter.

The Moldovan President, Maia Sandu, after a meeting of the national security council urged his citizens to remain calm.

President Maia Sandu said;
“We urge citizens to keep calm and feel safe.”
The President explained that the blasts were due to “an attempt to escalate tensions,” and also cited “internal differences between various groups in Transnistria that have an interest in destabilising the situation.”

Formerly part of the USSR, Moldova faced political instability, economic decline, trade obstacles, and other hardships following the Soviet Union’s collapse in 1991.
