Steve Davis OBE is a retired professional snooker player from England. He is best known for his dominance of the sport in the 1980s, when he reached eight World Snooker Championship finals in nine years, won six world titles, and was ranked number one in the world for seven consecutive seasons.

He was the first player in the professional competition to make an officially recognised maximum break, and the first to earn £1 million in career prize money. He famously finished second to Dennis Taylor in one of the sport’s most memorable matches, the 1985 World Snooker Championship final.
Its dramatic black-ball ending drew 18.5 million viewers, breaking UK records for any broadcast after midnight and any broadcast on BBC Two that are still in place today. He is the only snooker player to have won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award in 1988.
