Annelies Marie ‘Anne’ Frank was born in Frankfurt in 1929 to a Jewish family and spent the majority of her childhood there. She and her older sister, Margo, both liked to study and struggled with the difficulties of being immigrants and obtaining adequate educational support. When Nazi forces invaded the Netherlands in the early 1940s, life became increasingly difficult for the family.

The family was apprehended by Nazi police in the summer of 1944 and deported to a concentration camp. Margot and Anne Frank were separated from their parents in November and sent to a different camp, where they died in spring 1945, allegedly of typhus.
Anne was only 15 years old at the time. Frank’s diary is widely regarded as one of the most profound and sensitive documents describing the appalling conditions in which Jews lived during the Nazi occupation. Her father, who dedicated his life to popularising the book and her daughter’s life, survived Anne.
