Heard has accused Depp of assaulting her physically and sexually on numerous occasions both before and during their brief marriage. Depp filed the lawsuit after Heard referred to the allegations in a 2018 op-ed piece for The Washington Post.

Depp testified that to avoid her badgering, he took two oxycodone pills an opiate to which he admits he was addicted at the time locked himself in the plane bathroom and fell asleep.
