Severus Snape killed the Hogwarts Headmaster because Dumbledore asked him to. When he found out he only had a year to live, Dumbledore asked Snape to kill him when the time came, hoping to avoid a humiliating and agonising death.

He wanted Snape to remain a trusted Death Eater, as well as to prove his loyalty to Lord Voldemort and show him that he hadn’t failed.

Dumbledore also wanted to protect Draco’s soul because he was aware that Lord Voldemort had ordered Draco Malfoy to kill him. He was well aware that Draco would be unable to complete the task. He didn’t want the murder to have any impact on one of his students, as he has always been a good teacher.

Dumbledore knew he was dying because he had discovered the Marvolo ring, which resurrects the dead, and, like most mortals, he could not resist using it on himself. The curse of the ring, on the other hand, was slowly killing him. Snape, not wanting Dumbledore to suffer any longer, effectively put him out of his misery while also saving Malfoy.
