Her jet-powered car set a speed record of 522.783 mph (841.338 km/h). According to a police investigation, Ms Combs’ car crashed due to “a mechanical failure of the front wheel,” which was “most likely caused by striking an object in the desert.”

According to the Harney County Sheriff’s Office, the wheel failed while the car was travelling at speeds approaching 550 mph.

The cause of death for Combs was determined to be “blunt force trauma to the head,” according to the report. Following the collision, the vehicle burst into flames. Combs did not get burnt.

Combs appeared to express her desire to break O’Neil’s record on Instagram just days before her death. ”It may seem a little crazy to walk directly into the line of fire… those who are willing, are those who achieve great things,” she wrote. “People say I’m crazy. I say thank you”
