Mwai Kibaki held on to power albeit illegally at some point until 2013 when he looked quite weary and maybe, had no strength left in him to hold on to power.
A proud looking but rather worn President Kibaki handed over the Kenyan presidency to his successor, Uhuru Kenyatta, on 9 April 2013 at a public inauguration ceremony held at Kenya’s largest stadium.
The handover marked the end of his presidency and of his 50 years of public service.
For his personal life, Mwai Kibaki was married to Lucy Muthoni from 1961 until her death in 2016 and they had four children:
Judy Wanjiku, Jimmy Kibaki, David Kagai, and Tony Githinji.
Mwai Kibaki’s son, Jimmy Kibaki has so far had unsuccessful plans to be his father’s political heir.
