Johor-born Tan Sri Ali Hamsa, the country’s 13th top secretary to the Government of Malaysia, died today in Dublin, Ireland.

Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali, the current Chief Secretary, confirmed his death.
“Truly, his death during Ramadan is a big loss to the country and the civil service,” Mohd Zuki said in a statement. His cause of death was not stated.
Ali joined the administrative and diplomatic services in 1981, according to Mohd Zuki, before moving to various ministries and departments. His distinguished civil service career included positions in the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Transport, and the Economic Planning Unit, among others.

On June 24, 2012, Ali was sworn in as chief secretary. His tenure in that position came to an end on August 30, 2018, when the Pakatan Harapan coalition was elected to federal power.
Ali later testified as a prosecution witness in the combined 1MDB audit tampering trial of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Arul Kanda Kandasamy, the company’s last CEO.
Ali leaves behind his wife Puan Sri Rohani Abdullah and four children.
