Self-driving cars combine a variety of sensors to perceive their surroundings, such as thermographic cameras, radar, lidar, sonar, GPS, odometry and inertial measurement units.

There are 9.1 driveless car crashes per million miles driven. The self-driving car accident rate is higher than the one of human-driven vehicles. That is to say, regular vehicles have a rate of 4.1 crashes per million miles.

Has anyone been killed by a self-driving car?

On November 20, 2018, the Uber crash in Tempe was believed to be the world’s first death by a self-driving vehicle.

The event resulted in the death of Elaine Hezerberg(a pedestrian) whereas the first person to get blamed was Rafaela Vasquez (the safety driver in the Uber car).
