Tax returns allow taxpayers to calculate their tax liability, schedule tax payments, or request refunds for the overpayment of taxes.

In the United States, tax returns are filed with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or with the state or local tax collection agency containing information used to calculate taxes.

Tax returns are generally prepared using forms prescribed by the IRS or other relevant authority.

Why is the IRS taking so long with amended returns?

There are several reasons your refund may be delayed;

Firstly, it could be stuck in a processing queue if you file a paper return and as of March 11, 2022, the IRS said it had 7 million unprocessed individual returns and that it is still trying to catch up on a backlog because of the pandemic.

“It’s taking us longer than normal to process mailed correspondence and more than 21 days to issue refunds for certain mailed and e-filed 2020 tax returns that require review,” the IRS said.

Some returns are also taking longer because of corrections needed that are related to the earned-income tax credit and the pandemic-related stimulus payments (officially termed a “Recovery Rebate Credit”).

Other returns are also delaying because of the need for further review due to an issue related to the advance child tax credit.
