The Affordable Care Act (ACA), formally known as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, and colloquially known as Obamacare, is a landmark United States federal statute enacted by the 111th United States Congress and signed into law by President Barack Obama on March 23, 2010.

Together with the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 amendment, it represents the U.S. healthcare system’s most significant regulatory overhaul and expansion of coverage since the enactment of Medicare and Medicaid in 1965.

The ACA’s major provisions came into force in 2014 and by 2016, the uninsured share of the population had roughly halved, with estimates ranging from 20 to 24 million additional people covered.

Secondly, to reduce health care costs and raise revenue for insurance expansion, the ACA imposed an excise tax on high-cost health plans.

In order to raise additional revenue for reform, the ACA imposed excise taxes on health insurers, pharmaceutical companies, and manufacturers of medical devices; raised taxes on high-income families; and increased limits on the income tax deduction for medical expenses.

How is ACA tax credit calculated?

To calculate ACA tax credit for the 2022 tax year under the Rate of Pay Safe Harbor using hourly workers’ earnings, you have to take into consideration the employee’s lowest hourly rate as of the first day of the coverage period and multiply it by 130, the minimum total of hours an employee must work on average to be ACA full-time.
