How Many Marriages End In Divorce?

Almost 50 percent of all marriages in the United States will end in divorce or separation.

But based on the 2021 data from the World Population Review, California now has one of the lowest divorce rates in the country at 9.30%.

This figure refers to the percentage of the California population (estimated to be 39.9 million this 2021) that is divorced.

The most commonly reported major contributors to divorce were lack of commitment, infidelity, and conflict/arguing.

The most common “final straw” reasons were infidelity, domestic violence, and substance use. More participants blamed their partners than blamed themselves for the divorce.

Both ex-spouses take a loss, but typically, men suffer a larger hit to their standard of living than women — between 10 and 40% — due to alimony and child support responsibilities, the need for a separate place to live, an extra set of household furniture and other expenses.

While some may be happier after a divorce, research indicates most adults who divorce have lower levels of happiness and more psychological distress compared to married individuals.

Divorce can bring up new conflicts between couples that cause more tension than when they were married.
