Patrick Sammy Mills AM was born on August 11, 1988, in Canberra, Australia to his parents Benny Mills and Yvonne Mills. He is of Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal Australian descent.
Patty Mills’ father, Benny, is a Torres Strait Islander (Muralag) while his mother, Yvonne, is Aboriginal Australian (Kokatha). His uncle is former Olympian basketballer Danny Morseu who made history as the second Indigenous Australian to represent Australia at the Olympics in basketball.
Patty Mills schooled at Marist College in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, however, he left at the end of 2004 to attend the Australian Institute of Sport and Lake Ginninderra College. He was awarded the prestigious RE Staunton Medal at the U20 Nationals in Perth in January 2006.

Patty Mills attended Saint Mary’s College of California from 2007 to 2009, where he played college basketball. Patty was selected with the 55th overall pick by the Portland Trail Blazers on 25 June 2009. He made history as the first Saint Mary’s player since 1983 to be drafted and was also the highest pick since 1961.
Patty Mills played for the Portland Trail Blazers for two seasons. He has also played for the Melbourne Tigers of the National Basketball League (NBL), the Xinjiang Flying Tigers in China and then the San Antonio Spurs. He signed with the Brooklyn Nets on 10 August 2021, making his Nets debut, against the Milwaukee Bucks on 19 October.
