Although biblical historians disagree on the exact date of Jesus’ crucifixion, it is generally acknowledged that it occurred on or near Passover (Nisan 14) under the governorship of Pontius Pilate (who governed AD 26–36).

Several approaches, including the canonical Gospels, the chronology of Paul’s life, and various astronomical models, have been used to determine the year of the crucifixion.

Scholars have put the date of Jesus’ crucifixion somewhere between 30 and 33 AD, with Rainer Riesner claiming that “the fourteenth of Nisan (7 April) of the year A.D. 30 is, apparently in the opinion of the majority of contemporary scholars as well, far and away from the most likely date of Jesus’ crucifixion.

Another date that scholars choose is Friday, April 3, 33 AD. The crucifixion takes place during the third hour (9 a.m.) in Mark 15:25, and Jesus’ death takes place at the ninth hour (3 p.m.). Jesus spent about 6 hours on the cross.
