On 15 April 1989, a catastrophic human crush occurred during a football match at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. It happened during an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at the Leppings Lane stand’s two standing-only central pens, which were designated for Liverpool fans.

Shortly before kick-off, police match commander David Duckenfield ordered exit gate C to be opened in an attempt to relieve overcrowding outside the entrance turnstiles, resulting in an influx of supporters entering the pens.

As a result, the pens were overcrowded, resulting in a crush. It has the highest death toll in British sporting history, with 97 deaths and 766 injured. Ninety-four individuals died that day; another died a few days later in the hospital, and a third victim died in 1993.

The match was postponed and rescheduled for 7 May 1989 at Old Trafford in Manchester; Liverpool won and went on to win the FA Cup that season.
