Margaret Lockwood, an actress who rose to prominence in British cinema in the late 1940s, passed away in July 1950. She was 73 years old at the time. She spent her later years in isolation in Kingston upon Thames, dying of cirrhosis of the liver at the Cromwell Hospital in Kensington, Julia Lockwood, an actress, was her only surviving child.

She was born on September 15, 1916, in Karachi, Pakistan, and was educated in England. She had her first stage role as a fairy in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” when she was 12 years old.

Margaret received her training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and at the age of 19, she directed her debut picture, “The Amateur Gentleman.” Fear and espionage are two words that come to mind while thinking about this book.

Miss Lockwood rose to notoriety as a young woman in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1938 picture “The Lady Vanishes,” in which she played a frightened heroine.

Her other  films include the 1940 ”Night Train,”  ”The Stars Look Down” (1941), another Reed film, about a catastrophe in an English mining town; ”The Man in Gray” (1943)
