Russia’s navy is enormous and is the second most powerful naval fleet in the world after the United States. The Russian Navy is the Russian Armed Forces’ naval arm. It has existed in various forms since 1696, with the most recent iteration replacing the Commonwealth of Independent States Navy in January 1992. (which had itself succeeded the Soviet Navy following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in late December 1991).

Surface Forces, Submarine Forces, Naval Aviation, and Coastal Troops are the four combat services that make up the Russian Navy.

The Navy also includes support units afloat and ashore. Special forces are not included. The Naval Spetsnaz brigades are assigned to the separate fleets’ Main Intelligence Directorates, whereas the Counter-Diversionary Forces and Assets (C) (which are troops that protect the Navy from intrusions by enemy special forces) are part of the Coastal Forces.
In terms of boats and ships, Russia has: 1 Aircraft carrier, 2 Battlecruisers, 3 Cruisers, 10 Destroyers,11 Frigates, 81-83 Corvettes, 21 Landing ship tanks (LST), 40 Landing craft, 18 Special-purpose ships, 3 Patrol ships, 56 Patrol boats, 49 Mine countermeasures vessels, 12 Ballistic missile submarines,10 Cruise missile submarines, 14 Nuclear Attack submarines, 22 Diesel Attack submarines and 12 Special-purpose submarines
