Viktor Medvedchuk: Who Is The Pro-Putin Politician Arrested In Ukraine?

Viktor Medvedchuk is a Ukrainian lawyer, business oligarch and politician who was elected as People’s Deputy of Ukraine on August 29, 2019. He is the chairman of the pro-Russian political organisation, Ukrainian Choice and an opponent of Ukraine joining the European Union.

On February 19, 2019, the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine included Medvedchuk and his wife, Oksana Marchenko, on the Ukrainian sanction list, due to alleged financing of terrorism.

Medvedchuck escaped this house arrest on February 28, 2022, four days after the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine and went missing. On March 8, 2022, he was removed from the post of chairman of Opposition Platform – for life.

On April 12, 2022, Medvedchuck was arrested on accusations of treason by the Ukrainian secret service.
